Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi · Software Engineer & Technical Writer

Christian Joudon

I build software and help people find their way through it.

I’m a software engineer and writer working across financial operations, booking systems, community discovery, and AI-assisted data analysis. I connect product design, databases, APIs, and interfaces into usable tools, then write the guidance that helps people understand them. My wider practice includes research essays, interactive data stories, visual design, and creative writing.

About

A way back into the work.

Every workplace asks experienced people to become beginners again in small, consequential ways.

My work asks how a system can help someone understand what is happening and move forward. I work from the shape of a product through its database, services, and interface, with the writing and visual design developing alongside the software.

At Hawaii Life, I work inside the reservation and accounting processes I’m trying to improve. An invoice can arrive by email, its property information can live elsewhere, and the next step can depend on a note someone has to find again.

I build software to bring those pieces together, then put short, skimmable guidance where someone needs it. Fuller tutorials explain the process; a clear label, review step, or brief reminder helps a colleague return after an interruption.

My technical writing starts with understanding how a system behaves: what information it needs, which decisions it makes, and what those decisions let someone do. That same attention shapes my product walkthroughs, research essays, and interactive data stories.

Screenwriting, songwriting, photography, and design are also part of my practice. They have made me attentive to pacing, emotional specificity, and the way a reader’s understanding develops. I bring that attention into technical work without losing the detail it needs.

Software & Systems

Products and practical systems.

I work across product design, database modeling, backend services, interfaces, and documentation. These projects range from complete business applications to focused tools for analysis, scheduling, and daily operations. The case studies explain what each system does and how its parts work together.

Operational Workflows

The work around the software.

At Hawaii Life, accounting work reveals where information gets separated: an email, a spreadsheet, a document, and an entry in another system. I build tools and write guidance that reconnect those steps, with clear points for staff review.

Email → review → accounting entry

Invoice preparation

An email-to-accounting dashboard retrieves messages, identifies invoices, and brings extracted details, draft accounting memos, and source files into one table.

Staff can compare the prepared information with the original invoice before copying it into Escapia. The workflow supports that review and entry step; direct integration is planned around future platform updates.

Email processing · AI extraction · Review interface · Accounting memos

Property record → request → document

Insurance renewal and collection

An Apps Script workflow connects property insurance records, a curated outreach list, and personalized owner correspondence. Multiple affected properties can be grouped into one request for the same recipients.

The message puts the required document, upload portal, and passcode instructions together. Preview and draft modes support staff review, while a contact ledger helps prevent duplicate outreach within a mailing.

Apps Script · Google Sheets · Upload portal · Owner correspondence

Guest record → receipt → email draft

Refund correspondence

The Refund Builder maps each guest to a Gmail draft and the matching receipt in Drive. The email explains the refund while keeping its supporting document attached.

Batch labels bring the prepared messages together for accounting review. The system handles the repetitive assembly so staff can focus on the recipient, amount, and evidence.

Source document → consistent record

Document and memo standards

Invoice processing also needs consistent language. I develop AI-assisted workflows for normalizing document names and accounting descriptions, supported by practical staff guides.

The instructions explain how to prepare the information, what to check against the source, and where a judgment still needs a person. Short references make those standards easier to return to during the work.

Technical & Editorial Writing

Making the connections clear.

I follow a subject from its underlying mechanisms and evidence to what it means for the reader. These pieces bring research, explanation, and interactive data into the same story.

AI & economic research

AI-Driven Virtual Economies

Data & economic models

Earned Parsimony

An argument for examining a broad field of economic data before deciding what a model can safely leave out. The essay connects representation learning with economic modeling, then separates the demands of prediction, explanation, and causal inference.

Technical writing in practice

Guidance beside the task.

At Hawaii Life, I write instructions around the documents, decisions, and review steps staff need to handle. The format depends on the moment: a fuller walkthrough for learning a process, or a brief reference for finding the next step.

WorkflowWhat the writing helps someone do
Invoice preparationName documents consistently, prepare accounting memos, and check entries against the source.
Document collectionUnderstand what to provide, where to upload it, and how it connects to an insurance renewal or property record.
Product walkthroughsFollow a task through the interface and understand the meaning of its choices, statuses, and review steps.

Tutorials, walkthroughs, and brochures are available on request.
